How to Choose the Right Paint Colors for Your Home

When you’re not sure what paint color will suit your home, it can be hard to pin down a good answer. There are as many colors as you can imagine, and it’s hard to visualize how a room will look with any number of these colors applied. But there’s a way to guide you in choosing the right paint colors for your home.

What’s the Room’s Function?

First thing first, consider what the function of the room is. Is it a living room that you want to be the hub for social gatherings? Is it a dining room that you want to feel more cozy? Or maybe you have a room that’s meant to be relaxing and calm, where you hang out to unwind. For example, for calming energy pick blue, purple, or green.

Experiment With Your Favorite Color

What’s your favorite color? Is it blue? Is it green? Is it red? Think about how the room you’re going to paint will look in these colors. If it feels off, think about why. Maybe it will feel too dull. Maybe it will feel too bright. Then consider how a slightly different hue of that color will look. Green, for example, comes in dark, soothing forest green. But it also comes in bright, loud, energetic neon green. While your favorite color is green, there may be plenty of greens to experiment with.

Natural Light

Natural light will interact with the color of the room a lot. If you want to paint a room with no windows and little light, maybe picking a dark color like black or blue will make the room feel hostile or sad. If you have a room with a couple of windows, but the light doesn’t come into the house from that side too much, you could work with a brighter hue of a color you want to use. Compare that to a room that already receives lots of natural light; maybe you don’t want to add more bright colors so that you and your guest will not have to wear sunglasses inside.
